Community & Sustainability
Your Stay = Big Wins for the Island & Community 🌎🌟
How Your Stay Can Give Back at The Hideaway at Hull Bay
At The Hideaway at Hull Bay, we believe in making a difference. Every guest contributes to the well-being of our island and its community through various sustainability and community initiatives.
Northside Sport Fishing Club
The Northside Sport Fishing Club is a neighborhood charitable organization that raises funds primarily through the annual Bastille Day Fishing Tournament that has been hosted at The Shack at The Hideaway for decades. We donate all profits made from this event to the Northside Sport Fishing Club that uses them to support community organizations, educational programs and provide youth scholarships.
Recognized by National Geographic as one of the best French Culture celebrations, the community and tourists alike come early in the morning for the Bastille Day Fishing Tournament, stay for the weigh-in, and enjoy live music and the award ceremony at The Shack.
Protecting Our Coral Reefs
Perhaps the greatest natural resource in the Virgin Islands is our coral reef. Coral reefs are the cornerstone for tropical ocean biodiversity. One of the most harmful impacts to them is the settling of land based sediment onto the reefs during major rain events. The Hideaway is located beachside at the bottom of the Hull Bay valley where the natural course of neighboring hillside water flow ends up.
In an effort to mitigate the impacts of excessive sediment flowing into the ocean during storms, a detention pond was engineered and built on-site to capture heavy sediment before it has the chance to enter the ocean. This pond holds water temporarily, allowing heavier sediment to sink to the bottom, ultimately allowing cleaner water to then flow into the ocean. The nutrient rich soil captured in the pond is removed during the dry season and then used in the natural landscape of The Hideaway.
This system supports the University of The Virgin Islands’ and the VI Department of Planning and Natural Resources' coral restoration efforts by helping coral thrive and keeping Hull Bay clean after heavy rains.

Sustainability Initiatives
Mangrove Restoration Partnership With The University Of The Virgin Islands
The Hideaway is a proud partner of the University of the Virgin Islands' Mangroves Growing, Research, Restoration, Outreach, and Education (GRROE) program along with the Mangroves In The Classroom program.
Mangroves are an important plant species as they help improve water quality, our nurseries for juvenile fish species and enhance coastal resilience.
As of October 2024, the Mangroves in the Classroom program has hosted 290 middle and high school students to plant and monitor 490 red mangroves at The Hideaway at Hull Bay’s mangrove area with on-going field trips continuing at the site.
Sustainable Farming Practices
Hideaway Farm is driven by regenerative agriculture practices that focus on increasing biodiversity, composting and improving soil quality. Multiple varieties of fruit trees and crops are grown together and organic materials created from pruning are reused onsite.
Eco-friendly Toiletry and Cleaning Supplies
We take pride in using biodegradable supplies in bottles made from sugarcane and use gentle, earth-friendly soaps diluted in water for cleaning. Our paraben, sulfate, and cruelty free products help us maintain cleanliness without harming the environment.
Property-Wide Composting
Our composting initiative is a key part of our commitment to sustainability. By composting organic waste across the property, we are not only using the end product to help enrich our soil, we are diverting waste that would otherwise go to the landfill.
Water Stations
To minimize synthetic and microplastics, we’ve never offered single-use plastic water bottles at our private estate and event venue at The Hideaway and provide water stations across the property. Stay hydrated and help reduce plastic waste!
Natural
Pest Control
We manage pests naturally across the property, using clove and peppermint oil sprays for mosquito mitigation. This ensures a comfortable stay for you and a safer environment for our local pollinators and ecosystem.
Educational
Farm Tours
We invite local youth to experience the natural beauty of the island through immersive outdoor education. Our farm tours offer a hands-on opportunity to explore the local ecosystem and foster a deeper connection with nature. We proudly host homeschool groups, 4-H clubs, and other youth organizations, sharing our passion for outdoor learning. To learn more, visit our Farm page.
