Your Seasonal Guide to St. Thomas

Thinking about booking a Caribbean escape, but not sure when to visit? Like most destination places, St. Thomas has high and low seasons. Depending on what kind of traveler you are and your reasons for visiting, one season may be better than the other.

To help you plan your trip here is a seasonal breakdown of the weather, activities, and important things to consider.

Winter Hull Bay

Winter

  • December marks the start of the dry season. Expect temperatures in the 70s and a pleasant breeze.

  • Superb surfing, whale and dolphin sightseeing, and holiday festivities like the annual Miracle on Main Street featuring steel drums, carolers, and local arts and crafts.

  • Winter is considered peak tourism season, so anticipate crowds, long waitlists, and higher airfare and hotel rates.

Spring

  • Mild weather and little rainfall continue through May with average temperatures in the 80s.

  • Great fishing, stunning flora, whale and dolphin sightseeing, and special events like Carnival, which is celebrated in St. Thomas from mid-April to the beginning of May.

  • Many consider this the best time to visit when crowds start to dissipate around mid-April.

Summer Hull Bay

Summer

  • June marks the start of the wet season, but tropical showers rarely last long. August is the hottest month of the year with average temperatures in the high 80s.

  • Flat calm waters make for ideal snorkeling and fishing. The Bastille Day Kingfish Tournament takes place in July and the U.S. Virgin Islands Open/Atlantic Blue Marlin casts off in August.

  • With a slower pace on the island, you'll have a better chance to appreciate the local culture and cuisine.

Fall

  • September marks the beginning of peak hurricane season. October is the wettest month. November sees a drop in temperature.

  • With the average sea temperature at 84 degrees, this is one of the best times to go swimming. In November, there is the annual Holiday Arts, Crafts & Music Festival.

  • Take advantage of lower rates. Book early because November is the last month before tourism picks up again.
